I actually like this one the best of all that I've read. (I think). Of course, it's like comparing apples to oranges, I guess. Not as political, but very gripping.
I felt that you really let us into the mind of the lead character. It was dark and sad - but very well written.
I just started "Balls".

Thanks!
Good Neighbors is actually my favorite book of mine. While I think Second Grea-*test*-('") was the best concept, I think in Good Neighbors I nailed the writing.
Balls is my least favorite.
If I were to grade them on writing:
Good Neighbors B+
Ninth Square B-
Second Grea-*test*-('") C+
Balls C-
But I would give Second Grea-*test*-('") an A for concept.
If I were to grade my book covers (none of which I really had any say in):
Ninth Square paperback A
Ninth Square hardcover A-
Second Grea-*test*-('") B
Balls D-
Good Neighbors F
Best book, worst cover!

Actually, I think that I agree with your order - but you are way too hard on yourself for the writing ability scores...
I just finished Balls last night - I didn't like it as well as the other ones. BUT, (and this is probably terrible to you), baseball isn't really high on my sportswatching list!
I was here at Ok State when Robin Ventura, Pete Incavaglia and crew were here - and I still didn't even go to a ballgame! I watched a few on tv, while I was getting ready to go out to the bar! AND I had no idea who Allie P Reynolds was (that's the name of our college ballpark) AND even worse, I grew up 14 miles from Commerce (Mickey Mantle) and didn't even remember his nickname until I read Balls!
I'm big on basketball and football...
